H. Lindley Hosford
Lyme Art Colony
(August 19, 1877–September 5, 1945) In Lyme: c. 1903
While a student at the Art Students League in New York City, Hosford first came to Old Lyme in 1903 to study with Frank Vincent DuMond. After marrying the station master's daughter in 1905, he began a lifelong association with the Lyme Art Colony. He and his wife bought a house on Bill Hill in Lyme, and he continued to assist DuMond with the Lyme Summer School of Art during the off season from his work in the theater.

He attended the National Academy of Design, the New York School of Art, and studied under William Merritt Chase, Frank Vincent DuMond, Francis Jones and F. Luis Mora. Hosford specialized in etching. He gathered subjects for his work in Connecticut and Minnesota, where he worked for the Oliver Mining Company as public relations counsel.
